Brick Staining | Chicago & Chicagoland
Permanent color that soaks into the brick instead of sitting on top of it. Nothing to peel, no trapped moisture, no plastic sheen. The brick still looks like brick. It is just the color you actually wanted.
Real Projects, Real Homes
The same house, from the same spot on the lawn. Not one brick was replaced and nothing was painted.
A full brick exterior taken from dated salmon to a soft warm white with penetrating mineral stain. Look at the mortar joints and the texture of the brick. Both are untouched. Only the color moved.
The Brutal Truth
Here is the part almost nobody tells a Chicago homeowner before the painter shows up. Once latex goes onto brick, you do not really get to change your mind.
Paint forms a film across the face of the masonry. It looks fine for a season or two. Then Chicago does what Chicago does. Water finds its way in behind the film, freezes, expands, and pushes. The coating lifts along the mortar joints first, then blisters, then comes off in sheets. Every spring the wall looks a little worse than the one you started with. And stripping failed paint off rough brick is a slower, filthier, more expensive job than the brick ever was to begin with.
"Paint sits on brick. Stain becomes the brick. That one difference decides what your wall looks like in ten years."
Brick staining is the other road. A penetrating mineral stain soaks into the brick and bonds inside the pores, so the color becomes part of the masonry rather than a layer on top of it. The wall keeps breathing. The texture is untouched. Every joint, every rough face, every bit of character sits exactly where it was. The only thing that changed is the color.
And unlike paint, it is not a maintenance cycle. It is done.
Plain English
Brick staining is a permanent color change made with a mineral stain that penetrates the brick rather than coating it. Think of it the way a wood stain works, not the way paint works.
The stain is translucent, so it shifts the color of the brick while the variation between individual bricks still shows through. That is why a stained wall reads as brick and a painted wall reads as a solid block. It is also why staining works on the ugliest problem in masonry, an orange or salmon brick that fights everything else on the house, without turning the whole facade into a flat panel.
Why Just Art Studio
Every project is personally completed by Justyna, with close attention to color, texture, and detail.
Years of experience in art and mural painting, complemented by a growing specialization in masonry staining and decorative finishes. Every surface is carefully crafted by hand to achieve a distinctive, one-of-a-kind result.
No latex, no masonry paint, no elastomeric. If it forms a film on the surface, it is not going on your brick.
Every batch of brick drinks color differently. Yours gets tested on your actual masonry before a single full course goes on.
Chicago homeowners rate us 5.0 on Google. Masked, protected, and cleaned up behind us.
What We Stain
If it is brick and it is the wrong color, it can almost certainly be fixed.
Staining a brick fireplace is the most common call we get. If that is your project, the fireplace makeover page has the full before and after.
Brick Color Matching
The second half of this trade, and the half almost nobody offers.
You had tuckpointing done. Or a chimney rebuilt, or a window opening filled in, or a hundred spalled bricks swapped out. The masonry work itself is solid. The problem is that you can see exactly where it happened, because the new brick does not match the old brick and it never will on its own. New brick is the wrong tone, the wrong age, and often the wrong batch entirely.
Brick color matching fixes that. We tint mineral stain to the surrounding masonry and blend the new work into the old, brick by brick and joint by joint, until the patch stops announcing itself. Same for an addition that never quite matched the original house, and same for brick that got darkened by smoke or weather on one side only.
It is slow, fussy, unglamorous work. It is also the difference between a repair everybody notices and a wall that simply looks like a wall.
"Nobody should be able to stand in your driveway and point at the spot where the work was done."

Real brick, in real Chicagoland homes. Every one of these is stained, not painted.
Here Is The Thing
We run through dozens of freeze and thaw cycles here every single year. Each one is a small stress test on your masonry, and coated brick fails that test in a way bare brick does not.
Brick is porous on purpose. It takes on a little water and it lets that water back out again. Seal the face of it with paint or any film-forming coating and the water still gets in, through the mortar, through the back of the wall, up out of the ground. It just has nowhere to leave from. So it freezes inside the brick instead, expands, and pushes the face off from the inside out. Masons call it spalling. Once a brick face pops, no coating on earth brings it back.
"The brick was built to breathe. Everything we put on it has to let it keep breathing."
A penetrating stain does not seal anything. It colors the brick and leaves the pores open, which is the entire reason it is the only color change we will put on an exterior wall in this climate.
Then we take the risk off you completely.
Before we touch the wall properly, we mix stain and test it on your actual brick in an out of the way corner. You see it wet, you see it dry, and you see it in daylight. Brick from different decades and different kilns drinks color differently, so this step is not a formality and it is not optional.
Meet the Artist
Justyna has more than 15 years of experience in art, mural painting, and creative craftsmanship. For the past three years, she has expanded her work to include brick and stone staining and decorative finishes.
Her background in murals and fine art brings a strong eye for color, detail, and composition to every surface. Each finish is carefully created by hand for a distinctive, one-of-a-kind result.
How We Work
Clear, clean, and done right. Here is exactly what to expect.
We look at the brick, the mortar, and the condition of the wall, and tell you honestly what staining can and cannot do with it.
Stain has to reach the pores. Soot, chalk, efflorescence, and old sealer all come off first or the color will not take evenly.
Color is mixed to your brick, your trim, your roof, and the houses either side of you. Not chosen off a chart.
A real panel on your real wall, in a spot nobody looks at. You approve it wet and dry before anything else happens.
Brick by brick and course by course, varying the tone slightly so the wall keeps its natural variation instead of going flat.
Edges blended, mortar checked, everything masked comes off, and the site goes back cleaner than we found it.
The Dirty Secret
Two ways to change the color of a wall. Only one of them is still working in ten years.
Service Area
Based in Elmwood Park, we stain and color match brick for homes and businesses across Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.
If you have been searching for brick staining near me and getting painters who want to roll masonry paint on it, that is the whole reason this page exists. Chicago has a lot of orange and salmon brick from the 1950s through the 1980s, and almost all of it can be brought into this century without a single brick being replaced.
Not sure if we cover your area? Just ask. We travel across the Chicago metro.

Good to Know
It comes down to the square footage, how much cleaning the brick needs first, and how far the color has to move. Because no two walls are the same, we give you a clear written quote after seeing it in person. Reach out and we will walk you through it.
Stain penetrates the brick and bonds inside the pores, so the masonry keeps breathing, keeps its texture, and has nothing on the surface that can peel. Paint lays a film across the face, seals the brick, flattens the texture, and eventually blisters. Our guide to brick staining vs painting covers it in full.
Yes. Because the color is inside the brick rather than on it, there is no coating to fail. It does not flake, peel, or need recoating on a schedule. If you decide years later you want it deeper, it can be stained again over the top.
Yes, and brick color matching is one of the things we are asked for most. After tuckpointing, a chimney rebuild, or a run of replacement brick, we tint stain to the surrounding masonry and blend the new work in until the patch stops standing out. Mortar can be tinted to match as well.
Yes, and staining a brick fireplace is our most common indoor job. Mineral stain handles the heat cycling around a working firebox in a way latex paint simply does not. See the fireplace makeover page for a full before and after.
Not directly, because stain needs open pores to soak into and paint has sealed them. The paint has to come off first, and how realistic that is depends on how much of it is failing already. Send a close photo and one from further back and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth doing.
Both, within reason. Going darker or shifting a tone is straightforward. Going significantly lighter is possible with the right mineral products but there are limits, and we will tell you where those limits are on the walkthrough rather than after you have paid for it.
We work out of Elmwood Park and cover Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, including Oak Park, River Forest, Park Ridge, Norridge, Skokie, Evanston, Oak Brook, Hinsdale, and Naperville. If you are anywhere in the Chicago metro, send us a photo and we will confirm.
