Limewash | Chicago & Chicagoland
Soft, chalky, breathable lime finish that makes a room feel like a boutique hotel in Tuscany. Real materials, carefully brushed on by hand to create depth, texture, and a one-of-a-kind finish.
The Finish That Makes a New Wall Look Like It Has Always Been There
Limewash is paint made from limestone. The stone is fired, slaked with water, and turned into a thin mineral wash, then tinted with natural pigment. Brushed on, it soaks into the surface instead of sitting on top of it.
That one difference is the entire look. Regular paint sits on your wall like a sticker. Limewash becomes part of the wall, so you get soft, matte, cloud-like movement with real depth, and no two walls ever come out the same. On brick it is better still: the lime bonds into the masonry and gives you the weathered European finish that designers write into spec sheets. Here is the part most Chicago homeowners miss. Limewash is a hand skill, not a paint product. The mix, the cross-hatch brushwork, and the timing between coats are what separate a wall people stare at from a wall that looks like someone spilled milk on it.
Why Just Art Studio
Every project is personally completed by Justyna, with close attention to color, texture, and detail.
Years of experience in art and mural painting, complemented by a growing specialization in masonry staining and decorative finishes. Every surface is carefully crafted by hand to achieve a distinctive, one-of-a-kind result.
Genuine slaked-lime wash, mixed and tinted by hand. Not a flat latex sold with the word limewash on the can.
Lime lets moisture move out of the wall instead of trapping it. That matters on century-old masonry and through our freeze-thaw winters.
Chicago homeowners and businesses rate us 5.0 on Google. We treat every wall like it is going in a magazine.
What We Limewash
Interior walls, brick fireplaces, and full exteriors. Same material, four very different jobs.

Soft, mottled walls with cloud-like depth. The finish that makes a plain room look designed.

Dated orange brick turned into a soft, chalky focal point. The most requested limewash job we do in Chicago.

Facades, chimneys, and garden walls washed to a weathered European finish that ages instead of peeling.

Warm white, bone, greige, taupe, or a heavier mortar-washed look. Tinted to your room, not to a fan deck.
Where It Works
One finish, endless spaces. Here is where our Chicago clients love it most.

How We Work
Clear, clean, and done right. Here is exactly what to expect.
We see the room and the way light moves through it, then match the tint to the mood you want.
You see the wash on your actual wall before we commit. Limewash dries much lighter than it goes on, so this step is not optional.
Brick gets cleaned and dampened. Drywall and painted walls get a mineral primer so the lime bonds instead of flaking.
A thin, even wash brushed on in a cross-hatch motion to set the base and let the surface pull it in.
The layer that creates the depth. We work it while it is open to build the soft, cloudy character.
The lime carbonates and hardens over the following days. We leave the room cleaner than we found it.
The Dirty Secret About Painted Brick
Paint seals a wall shut. Limewash lets it breathe. On brick, that difference decides whether your fireplace still looks good in ten years.

Yes, and it is the job we get asked for most. Limewash bonds into the brick instead of coating it, so a dated orange or red fireplace turns soft and chalky while the texture of the masonry still shows through. If you want a deeper, more permanent color change instead, look at brick staining or a full fireplace makeover.
Yes, with the right prep. Limewash grips porous surfaces naturally, so drywall and painted walls need a mineral primer or a bonding limewash first. Skipping that step is the single most common reason DIY limewash flakes. Our prep is exactly what you are paying a pro for.
Not once it is cured and sealed properly. Fresh lime can dust slightly while it carbonates, which takes a few days. We finish interior walls so they are stable for everyday living, including hallways and around fireplaces.
Interior limewash lasts for many years and softens gracefully rather than peeling. Exterior brick typically holds its look for 5 to 7 years before you may want a refresh coat, and a refresh is far simpler than stripping failed paint.
Yes, which is one of its biggest advantages over paint. While it is still wet, limewash can be wiped back for a lighter, more distressed look. Later on it can be washed down, re-tinted, or coated over. Painted brick does not give you that option.
Limewash is real slaked lime that soaks into the surface for a soft, mottled, breathable finish. Whitewash is usually watered-down latex paint sitting on top of the brick. German smear is mortar troweled over the brick for a heavier, more textured European look. We do all three, and our guide to how to limewash walls breaks the differences down in plain English.
Yes. Limewash is tinted with natural pigment, so it is mixed rather than picked off a chart. Warm white, bone, greige, taupe, and soft grey are the most requested around Chicago. We always test the tint on your own wall first, because limewash dries a good deal lighter than it looks going on.
